AQS: The Metric That Matters – Driving App Stability & Performance Zero to Hero

As mobile applications become the heartbeat of modern businesses, their quality—encompassing performance, stability, and user experience—is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Yet, truly quantifying app quality can feel like chasing a moving target, often creating a disconnect between technical teams and business leadership. At Delivery Hero, we tackled this challenge head-on by developing the Application Quality Score (AQS), a powerful, composite metric that condenses the complexities of app performance and stability into a single, actionable number between 0 and 100. In this session, I'll unveil the AQS methodology, a groundbreaking approach that integrates seven critical sub-metrics: - Crash-free users - ANRs (Application Not Responding) - Frozen frames - Slow rendering - App start to interactive time - Core screen Time To Interactive (TTI) - App size I'll share how AQS provides a crystal-clear, quantitative measure of app quality, making it accessible and understandable for everyone from engineers to senior leadership. You'll hear firsthand about our journey with Delivery Hero's rider app, where, after defining AQS, I collaborated with the team to boost its score from a baseline of 0 to an impressive 70 within a single year. This talk will not only demonstrate the critical importance of defining such a holistic metric for technical quality visibility but also provide concrete, actionable technical recommendations. You'll learn the specific strategies and optimizations we implemented across various sub-metrics to achieve this significant AQS improvement. Discover how AQS has transformed into one of Delivery Hero's most crucial metrics, driving company-wide quality targets and fostering a culture where technical excellence is an undeniable business imperative. Key Takeaways: Master the AQS Framework: Learn to define and implement a composite quality score that unifies diverse performance and stability metrics into a single, quantifiable representation. Drive Organizational Alignment: Discover how a clear, universally understood quality metric like AQS can bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders, making app quality a shared, undeniable priority. Gain Actionable Improvement Strategies: Get practical, real-world technical recommendations and best practices for improving key mobile app quality indicators.
